Armenian national holidays
Armenia is a country with unique culture and customs. Armenian national holidays allow one to get acquainted with them and feel the special atmosphere of the region.
We will speak about the dates on which holidays will be celebrated in Armenia in 2025 and mention the best time to plan a trip for.

Official holidays

The official holidays in the country are established by the Law of the Republic of Armenia №ЗR-200 of January 6, 2001. Many of them are non-working days.

December 31 - January 2 – New Year holidays

New Year is celebrated for 3 days in Armenia. During this time, fairs, festivals and festivities are held in the cities. People gather with their families, visit relatives and friends. And children eagerly await the Armenian Santa Claus – here he is called Dzmer Papik or Kaghand Pap.
New Year holidays are a good opportunity for traveling. Among the tourist destinations during this period Tsaghkadzor, Aghveran, Hankavan, Dilijan, Ijevan, as well as Gyumri are popular.

January 6 – Christmas and Theophany

Armenians celebrate Christmas and Theophany on the same day – January 6. Before the holiday, the "Chragaluyts" liturgy is held in churches. Afterwards, believers carry lit candles and lamps to homes. It is believed that they bring blessings to the home.

January 28 – Army Day

On January 28, 1992, after Armenia gained independence from the USSR, the country established its own national army. And since 2001 this day has become a holiday and a non-working day. Holidays of Armenia – calendar of holidays: Armenian Army at the parade

March 8 – Women's holiday

There are 2 holidays dedicated to women in Armenia. Women are congratulated on:

  • March 8 – International Women's Day;
  • April 7 – Motherhood and Beauty Day.

The thing is that after the collapse of the USSR, the country's leadership decided to abandon the old holiday and they established a new one. However, Armenians began to celebrate both holidays one after the other. Therefore, several years later, March 8 was returned and even turned into a day off, unlike April 7.

May 1 – Labour Day

The Labour Day holiday was cancelled in 1991, however was reinstated in 2005 at the request of the local population. On May 1 demonstrations, festive concerts and other events are held in Armenia.

May 9 – Holiday of Victory and Peace

On this day, Armenians remember those who fought against fascism during World War II. Parades, memorial events, and concerts are held across the country. The heart of the celebrations is considered Victory Park in Yerevan, where the tomb of the "Unknown Soldier" is located. May 28 – Republic Day

On May 28, 1918, Armenia won the Battle of Sardarapat and became independent after nearly 6 centuries of oppression. The center of the celebration of this date is the "Sardarapat" Memorial Complex. It is located in the village of Araks, 11 km from the city of Armavir.

July 5 – Constitution Day

The constitution of the country was adopted on July 5, 1995. In honor of this date, festive events are held in Armenia.

September 21 – Independence Day

And on this day in 1991, the people of Armenia voted for independence from the USSR. Now it is celebrated as Independence Day.

In addition to official holidays, Armenia also celebrates others, many of which are related to religion.

Saint Sargis Day

Saint Sargis is the patron saint of youth and lovers. In Armenia, feast is celebrated in late January – mid-February. In 2025 particularly, the holiday will be held on February 15.

Vardanants holiday (Mercy and Heroism Day)

The holiday is celebrated on Thursdays, 8 weeks before Easter. In 2025, it will be celebrated on February 27. The symbol of the holiday is considered Vardan Mamikonyan, who led the uprising against the Sasanian Empire. In the middle of the 5th century, the Sasanian Empire wanted to force Armenia to renounce Christianity. However, the Armenians refused to bow to foreign control and defended their right to be Christians.

Trndez (also Tyarndaraj)

This is a holiday for newlyweds, which is celebrated on February 13.
During its celebration, lovers jump over bonfires. It is believed that if they manage to do this without letting go of each other's hands, they will live happily ever after.

Surb Zatik (Easter)

In 2025, Easter in Armenia will be celebrated on April 20. For this holiday, believers color eggs, prepare sweet pilaf with dried fruits, as well as fish dishes.

Vardavar

On July 27, 2025, the solemn church holiday of Vardavar will be celebrated.
Its main tradition is water pouring. People gather at fountains, ponds, run out into the street with buckets and pour each other with water.
At the same time, an annual festival is held in Garni, where Armenians, dressed in national costumes, dance, sing and take part in performances.
