Private tour: Hiking to Smbataberd fortress

Smbataberd is a fortress that seems to have stepped straight out of legend and still guards the mysteries of medieval Armenia. Built in the 5th century and later reinforced, it rose above Vayots Dzor as an impregnable guardian, protecting its people from enemy invasions. Standing on a steep mountain surrounded by deep gorges, the fortress appeared unreachable and enemies often retreated without even attempting a siege.

According to one version, it was named after Prince Smbat Orbelyan, while another attributes its name to King Smbat I Bagratuni, who left a significant mark on the country's history. Folklore tells of fearless warriors who defended the fortress for centuries and of secret passages leading to hidden treasures.
