Private tour: Hiking to Smbataberd fortress
Hiking to Smbataberd fortress
1. Hiking to Smbataberd fortress
170-180 min
According to one version, it was named after Prince Smbat Orbelyan, while another attributes its name to King Smbat I Bagratuni, who left a significant mark on the country's history. Folklore tells of fearless warriors who defended the fortress for centuries and of secret passages leading to hidden treasures. In the chronicles of Stepanos Orbelyan, it is also referred to as the Blue Fortress, a name that deepens its aura of mystery.
Today visitors can still see the ruins of the citadel, living quarters and ancient reservoirs that once sustained the fortress during sieges. The atmosphere of Smbataberd transports you to an era of knights, battles and conspiracies, where every stone foundation preserves the memory of centuries past.
Restoration works in 2006-2007 helped reinforce the walls, ensuring they continue to remind future generations of the power and glory of Armenian princes. Smbataberd is a place where legend and history intertwine, leaving every visitor with a sense of connection to Armenia's heroic past.
