In the picturesque region of Vayots Dzor, hidden among rugged cliffs and silent nature, lies the Church of the Holy Mother of God of Spitakavor – one of Armenia's profound spiritual symbols. The church was erected in the 13th century by the Proshyan princes, who left a remarkable imprint on the history and architecture of their era. Of the original monastic complex, only the main church has survived, yet it alone stands as an invaluable monument of medieval art and devotion.

The stone walls of Spitakavor breathe harmony of proportions, while its delicate decorative elements testify to the mastery of the architects who shaped it. For centuries, the church remained a place of prayer, pilgrimage and deep spiritual retreat. Spitakavor holds special importance as the resting place of Garegin Nzhdeh, an outstanding military leader and political thinker, who became one of the ideologues of Armenia's national liberation movement. His grave transformed the monastery into a site not only of faith but also of national remembrance.
