Boloraberd, better known as Proshaberd, is one of the most striking medieval fortresses of Vayots Dzor, rising on a hill near the village of Vernashen. Built in the 13th century, it served as the residence of Prince Prosh Khaghbakyan and impressed with the strength of its basalt walls. Covering an area of about 1.5 hectares, the fortress included residential and utility buildings, while the presence of a water supply system made it particularly advanced for its time.
Today only fragments of walls and towers remain, yet even these ruins allow us to imagine its former grandeur. From the fortress heights open picturesque views of the valley, reinforcing the sense of its strategic importance in the past.
Boloraberd is also tied to a legend: Prince Prosh, fearing attacks, hid his treasures within the fortress walls and in the nearby mountains. According to the tale, only one who can decipher the secret symbols left by the prince will find the hidden wealth. This story adds an air of mystery to the ruins, making a walk among them feel like a journey into the world of legends.
Boloraberd remains a monument of Armenian history where fact and legend intertwine, preserving for future generations the spirit of the Middle Ages.
